Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Electricity in Texas ran 14.94 cents per kilowatt-hour in 2024. A mini split's efficiency rating matters more here than in a cheaper state, because every inefficient hour costs more to run. These systems condition only the rooms you're using, instead of pushing air through ducts to the whole house. For a room addition, a garage, or any space your main system doesn't reach well, that targeted approach keeps the bill down compared to running a furnace or central AC harder to compensate.

Cooling starts in May here, so April is the month to have a new mini split in and running. Wait until the season's underway and you're installing around a heat wave, on a crew that's booked solid because every other call that week is an emergency too. Go in April and there's time to get the details right, the line set connections, the mounting, the spot the outdoor unit sits in. Those details matter more on a system that's about to run six months straight. Get it done before May and it's running the way it should from the first hot day, not catching up to one.

Any mini split going in here has to meet zone 3A's efficiency minimum

Parker County is zone 3A, and any split-system heat pump made from 2023 on has to hit 14.3 SEER2 for cooling and 7.5 HSPF2 for heating. That includes ductless units. There's no separate rule for mini splits, so whatever goes in has to clear that bar. A federal tax credit is available on qualifying equipment, which offsets part of what it costs to meet it.

Six months of run time a year means sizing mistakes don't stay small

That same outdoor unit runs six months a year here, and it's still working when the sun's gone down, the time-lapse above shows that. A mini split lets you size each zone to the room it's actually cooling, so the compressor isn't working a load it doesn't need to. That matters more over six months of 94 degree afternoons than it would somewhere milder. When you're comparing bids, ask what tonnage they're putting in each zone and why. A unit sized off a square footage chart instead of a load calculation will run longer than it should to hit the thermostat, and it'll do that every day from May to October.

The old unit gets disconnected, not just unplugged

A refrigerant line still holding refrigerant has to be recovered before the old equipment comes out, that's the law, not a courtesy. A tech pulls what's left, disconnects the line set and the electrical, and hauls the indoor and outdoor pieces off separately if that's easier than moving them as one.

Ductwork from a central system can stay right where it is

A mini split doesn't need the ducts a furnace or central AC used, but that doesn't mean they have to come out. If part of the house still runs on the old ducted system, or will again later, the ductwork keeps doing its job for those rooms while the mini split covers the ones it never reached well.

Installation cost mostly comes down to how many zones you're running and how far the line set has to travel. One indoor head connects to one outdoor unit, but add a second or third zone and you're adding line sets, more labor, and a bigger outdoor unit to drive all of them. Distance matters too. A line set run through an attic or around the outside of the house takes longer to install than one going straight through an exterior wall, and a longer run needs more refrigerant to charge correctly. Where the outdoor unit sits plays in as well. A pad on level ground near the wall is a straightforward set. A mounting bracket up high, or a spot that needs extra condensate line to drain properly, adds steps. None of that shows up on a price list until someone's looked at the actual walls and the actual distance between where the air starts and where it needs to end up.

A mini split installation starts with a load calculation for each room getting a head, not a tape measure and a guess. From there the crew mounts the indoor units, usually high on a wall or up in the ceiling, and sets the outdoor unit on its pad or bracket. The line set runs between them through a single hole in the wall, insulated the whole way, carrying refrigerant lines, a condensate drain, and electrical in one bundle. Once everything's connected, the line gets pulled down to a vacuum to clear out moisture and air before any refrigerant moves through it. Skip that step and the system runs with contamination in the lines that shows up later as a compressor problem. The last part is the charge, weighed in against the length of the line set, then a test run on both heat and cool before anyone calls it done.
